The following individuals have materially influenced the Access investment approach and the Firm throughout the years.
Eric Becker
Eric Becker has a long history of starting, backing and nurturing companies. Eric is currently the Co-Founder and Co-Chairman of Cresset, a registered investment advisor that offers personalized wealth advisory and financial planning services. Prior to Cresset, Eric co-founded Sterling Partners (1983),a value-added, growth private equity firm that raised eight funds with over $5.7B of capital. At Sterling, Eric served for 32 years as Senior Managing Director and Co-Chairman of the Operating Committee. Eric also founded the Caretta Group (2015), a private investment firm that invests in and partners with customer-focused growth companies that have a compelling mission,Trilogy/Vennpoint (2015), a real estate investment firm that invests in value-added real estate in the path of progress and Life Card International(Co-Founder), a healthcare technology company that automated claims processing and developed digital portable medical records. Eric is also keenly interested and active in a range of civic and philanthropic organizations including serving as the Co-Chairman of Chicago Ideas Week and as past Chapter Chairman of DC/Baltimore YPO, and as a Member of CEO and YPO Palm Beach.
Christopher Blackwell
Chris Blackwell is a seasoned finance and investment executive with a wealth of experience gained from a successful career as a global investment banking leader and private equity professional. He has acted asa valued partner to many North American and Asian companies as they have soughtto raise capital or undertake transformative transactions. Today, Chris serves as a Head of Investment Banking for Canaccord Genuity, a leading global middle market investment bank, where he oversees all non-resource related Canadian Investment Banking activities. Prior to Canaccord, Chris served as group leader and Managing Director of the Diversified Industries and Sponsor coverage for both CIBC and Scotia Bank. In addition to significant experience in the North American market, Chris also lived with his family in Hong Kong while leading the CIBC World Markets investment bank for Asia. Between 2013 and 2017, Chris was a Partner at Access Holdings. Chris holds an Honors Business Administration degree from the Ivey Business School at The University of Western Ontario and a Chartered Financial Analyst designation.
Steven Kaplan
Steven Kaplan teaches advanced MBA and executive courses in entrepreneurial finance and private equity, corporate finance, corporate governance, and wealth management. Business Week named him one of the top 12 business school teachers in the country. Professor Kaplan co-founded the entrepreneurship program at Booth.With his students, he helped start Booth’s business plan competition, the New Venture Challenge (NVC), which has spawned over one hundred companies that have raised over $600 million and created over $9 billion in value including GrubHub and Braintree/Venmo. He ranks among the top 60 in paper downloads and in paper citations (out of over 280,000 authors) on SSRN (Social Science Research Network). He is the co-creator of the Kaplan-Schoar PME (Public Market Equivalent) private equity bench marking approach. A Fortune Magazine article referred to him as "probably the foremost private equity scholar in the galaxy.” Kaplan serves on the boards of Morningstar, Zayo Group and the Illinois Venture Capital Association. He received his AB, summa cum laude, in Applied Mathematics and Economics from Harvard College and earned a PhD in Business Economics from Harvard University.
Charles Noell
Charlie Noell co-founded JMI and has over three decades of experience in the software industry. He is a former director of ServiceNow (NYSE: NOW). Since the early ’90s, Charlie has been president of the family investment company of John J. Moores, the founder and former chairman and CEO of BMC Software, Inc. Prior to joining JMI, he served as a managing director and co-head of Alex. Brown’s technology group. Charlie was also an investment associate in the treasury division of American Security Bank and at Pittsburgh National Bank. Charlie is a member of the board of directors of Authentify, Alex. Brown Realty, Inc. and Greystar Real Estate Partners. He also serves on the Center Stage Board of Trustees and the Board of Governors of St.Christopher’s School.
